Ubuntu popularity rising

A good place to start for Ubuntu beginners : Ubuntu Help .

Slow but steady, the popularity of Ubuntu (a Debian derived Linux-based operating system) is rising. Ubuntu is one of the best Linux distributions, a version for people that can be used on your desktop, laptop or workstation. For a quick preview you can download the Live Cd version and boot this OS in less then a few minutes.

In the popularity by region we can see Norway on the top probably because of the Norwegian version of the Dapper release and the Brown t-shirts you can buy from them.

A nice comment from Karianne Fog Heen , the Ubuntu Norway contact person told us that : “there are more European communities that sells the brown t-shirts, the French is one of them” and as a detail the Ubuntu shop link has white t-shirts for sale. The Norwegian version of Dapper is just a vision but we hope they will make it a reality.

Popularity By Country :

  1. Norway
  2. Finland
  3. Czech Republic
  4. South Africa
  5. Spain
  6. Slovenia
  7. Italy
  8. Portugal
  9. Greece
  10. France

We can see in the graph below the search volume for the term “ubuntu”. The increase was steady over the last two years.

While the search volume and news volume about Ubuntu is definitely on the rise, I would be more satisfied with data about actual number of Ubuntu installations live right now. There was a map of world depicting live Ubuntu computers somewhere on Ubuntu forums website. I think Mark Shuttleworth should release data for downloads / deployment of Ubuntu disk images, Shipit orders and other things. That would be a more realistic indicator of Ubuntu popularity.

This graph stops just shy of April, while April is when Feisty was released. It’s expected to go through the roof when google updates it.

  4. Angel says:

Great another platform to test on, jk, I like Ubuntu, I would use for everything if Adobe products were available for it.

  5. aistis says:

WOW, this is very cool, i use ubuntu myself and i am glad it is doing so well

Yeh, I use Ubuntu as well, i converted from Vista and I think that this is soooo much better, so many cool features and it hardly ever crashes, although the only downside is that it takes twice as long to boot up on my computer as Windows XP does on a computer half the spec as the Ubuntu laptop. But it is worth the wait and I am glad that it is doing well

Where’s the US? Is it down below the top 10 somewhere?

If this is the case then someone should tell Dell, who are still just supplying ubuntu to the US.

  8. Lelis says:

Ubuntu is great, and is good that the popularity is growing.

Maybe now software companies like Adobe could give a look to this popularity graphs to see that they are loosing some clients by not make unix version of their products.

    What is this?
This “article” and graph show nothing. This is DISinformation.

1: what evidence do you have in your article that ubuntu is becoming more popular?
2: the country list show also nothing where are the figures? who did the research? You know “facts” as we like to call them.
3: the graph show nothing at all again. 0 to what figure has it risen? what’s your source?

this article has been a waste of my time.

Dottorenova this graph is from data stored and processed by Google. The source is the information they’ve collected and made available for free on Google Trends ( http://www.google.com/trends ).

I have just recently learnt that the French government started to switch its preferred desktop from Microsoft to Ubuntu in June this year.

Also a computer manufacturer/supplier in the USA started to sell its computers with Unbuntu preinstalled for as little as $199.99.

With more attention being given to Ubuntu (and linux in general) and the fact that many microsoft users do not like Vista, or for that matter MS Office 2007, I hope the software developers such as Adobe will port more of their products over to linux.

In saying that, I use Ubuntu exclusively, I don’t have any MS software or for that matter any proprietory software at all and i don’t miss out on anything.

  12. I have working in the tecnology field for several years and recently installed Ubuntu.

Ubuntu is a great operating system, and I am doing everything I can to get the word out. Nice look, intuitive, great cost, and bundled with most if not all the software most users need. Go Ubuntu!

Ubuntu is a really nice OS, with lots of support, and suprisingly useful for a linux distro. however despite the glowing reports from its disciples, it still falls short in applications, that are provided on the windows platform by proprietory vendors.

Hopefully this will start to change over the next few years.

    Good Luck to Ubuntu

I almost quit ubuntu at the first days of I installed it. It’s hard and frustating. But then I realize that I’m expecting it to behave like windows, which was poisoning my mind.

But after about two months, I just use windows may be at 5% of my computer activities at personal cases.

  15. Eric says:

I have used Ubuntu for about three years now and love it. I have never had to spend a dime on software or anti-virus programs that don’t work. Windows does not get it and I doubt they ever will!

I made the switch to Ubuntu as my primary OS back when 7.04 first came out. The breaking point was when MS was going to end xp. From that point on i never looked back. I use part image to back up my partition on a regular basis. I’ve settled in on 8.04 the 3 year support. My transition to Ubuntu was a good switch all my computers are dells. Various years this also helped. Never had a virus, never had any crashes as of today, and this OS has been rock solid. There is a learning curve. but things have become second nature and if i forgot how to do something i just Google my question. part image has been my savior throughout, any changes i tried that didn’t work i just restored. I highly recomened part image.

I’ve tried many many flavors of Linux before Ubuntu. Ubuntu is by far the easiest for the beginner. I have Edubuntu on the kids PC. Perfect OS for young kids and school work and very well thought out.

Linux has come a long way, i think that its time our community came together and mad one flavor of KDE and one flavor of gnome. For the beginner this alone is enough to be turned away and stay with windows. I see it all the time. Support for none front running distros is scratchy at best unlike Fedora and Ubuntu anything below these are hit and headaches for the new user. Perfect example, Elive, if you have checked it out is a beautiful distro! but won’t boot because you need to install grub separate.

MS has now recognized Linux as a BIG threat they are going after TOMTOM for patent infringements. TomTom runs the Linux kernel. MS says there not going after Linux but only the company. Our community is ready and has more than enough recourse to take on MS. You can

I’ve used only Linux since -04 and now we are finally there. Particularly Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 have been just awesome! I love Ubuntu Software Center and Ubuntu One Music Store. I use Ubuntu at work and at home.
