STUFF NEVER TO DO

virus

  • Never open an exe(or any other file…well maybe except pictures and mp3) file you received from MIRC/YAHOO/MSN/AOL ( this is the easiest way to get infected ). There are so many reasons a file could be infected like : the person that sends you the file just wants to infect your computer with a virus , your friend doesn't even know the file is infected , the computer that sends you the file is hijacked and it appears that a friend is sending you the pictures but in fact the worm is self propagating.
  • Never give your password up to links from your email. Even they can appear legit like Pay Pall or a confirmation of your credit card, or just to see a picture from yahoo. 99% of them, if not all are just tricks to get your information. Read the mail careful before you don anything and check the URL , be sure it's from the original site and that is not a fake , update your browser to FireFox 2.0 / Opera 8 / Internet Explorer 7. All of them have build in psychics attacks prevention and they will let you know if the URL you're visiting look suspicious.
  • If you are redirected to adults/illegal sites and have to download a file be sure to have your Antivirus or the easy solution : just forget the file , it's so likely your computer will get infected with something that I advice you to leave that sites alone
  • If your using software like Limewire/WinMx/Kazza and you want to download the files first look at the size of it. An mp3 file will surely have more the 100KB so that's probably a trick file that you shouldn't download for any reason.

1.Protect against viruses
They can delete your files, destroy your hard drives, format your data, make your system unusable.

security There are a lot of good solution out there. The most important thing is to have ONE ACTIVE anti-virus on your computer. I can recommend you the one year free edition of Norton Antivirus that comes along with Google Pack , or the free edition of AVG . Just remember to have all the virus definition up to date and to make a full system scan from time to time.

2.Protect against Trojans
They can make your computer a host for people connected to the Internet. If you get infected the server could copy any of your confidential files , delete them or just play pranks to your computer.

Trojan viruses are becoming a thing of the past - well the common Trojans that is. There are still a big number of new worms and Internet exploits rising everyday but the user tends to infect itself by visiting all kinds of underground sites and UN-secure ones. Some anti-Trojan software is better then an antivirus because their database is focused on the detection and the behavior or malicious software that want to hijack your computer. You can check out Pestpatrol free version or the paied version of Trojan Hunter.

3.Protect against key-loggers
They are nasty litter buggers. They will write to a text file all the things you type : the mail you send to your girlfriend, the URL of the sites your visits or your messenger conversations.

This is a very important thread in this world. The danger don't necessary comes from your personal computer. The true danger comes from your best friend laptop or from an Internet cafe. Almost every person found it self at the mersey of someones else's computer. Maybe you like the fact that in public USA libraries the Internet access is free but did you know that most of them have a key logger installed on them ? Yes this is true and tested fact. What can you do when visiting a friend or an Internet coffee? Well there is a solution : install a little cool software that will disable most of the known key loggers let's say Keylogger Hunter for example. Another cool trick I've learn is this : when you want to log in to read your email for example write the first letter in the user box the focus on a picture with the mouse type some other letter and write the second user letter. The same way with the password. The result in the log file : a combination of keys that's impossible to decript.

4.Protect against spyware/adware
Did you ever find yourself on an adult site just by opening your browser.Did your screen got tens of pop-us and ads all of a sudden.Did you computer seems to work slower and slower by the day? That the effect of a spy-ware messing around with your computer. An exploit that you've download without knowledge just by using your browser.

Are you a big fan of Internet Explorer. Well that's not a problem. You can either become an advance user and use FireFox or start a long and painful clean of your system. You gone need 3 great software tools :

  • AD-Aware - great for cleaning most of the known spyware on your system
  • Microsoft Windows Defender - just to be sure you didn't miss one with AdAware
  • SpyWare Blaster - the best tool i found so far.It cleans even the trickiest spyware hidden on your system.

5.Protect against internet attacks

A firewall is a good thing. Lucky the Microsoft solution works decent and you won't really need another solution .Just remember to disable it when you want to do some file sharing or when you use some kind of ftp software and you're wondering why can't you upload the files to your server.Another free and good alternative is the Comodo Firewall.

If you have Windows XP, why do you use linux?
Basically I dont see any advantages to using linux over windows xp, Im dual booting windows
and ubuntu. Ubuntu is nice and all but I dont see anything that would make me prefer it
over windows. The only thing i have been using ubuntu for is web browsing playing
music/movies (cant play games) which I can do better/hassle free in windows.
So what are the advantages of l using linux over xp?
