Remy and the Forgotten Song
Remy was having a wonderful spring morning. The flowers were blooming, the sun was warm, and he had just discovered a patch of the sweetest clover in the meadow. Life was good.
Then he heard itāa sound so sad that it made his ears droop. It was a bird, perched on a low branch, trying to sing. But her song was broken, filled with gaps and wrong notes, and eventually, she stopped altogether.
Remy hopped closer. Hello, he said gently. I am Remy. Is everything okay?
The bird turned her head. She was a nightingale, with feathers the color of twilight. I am Melody, she said softly. And I have forgotten how to sing.
Forgotten? Remy asked.
I used to sing every morning, Melody explained. I would greet the sun with my voice. But then winter came, and I was silent for so long. Now spring is here, and when I try to sing... nothing comes out right. It is like I have lost my song.
Remy sat down beside her, thinking. He remembered when he had been too afraid to enter the Whispering Woods. He had almost lost himself to fear. But his friends had helped him remember who he was.
Maybe, Remy suggested, you have not lost your song. Maybe you just need help remembering why you loved to sing in the first place.
Melody tilted her head. Why I loved to sing?
Yes! Remy said, getting excited. Come with me. Let us go on an adventure to find your reason.
They set off through the meadow. Their first stop was the Sunrise Hill, where the morning light painted everything gold. Do you remember singing here? Remy asked.
Melody closed her eyes. I remember... the warmth on my wings. The way the light made everything glow. I sang because I was grateful for a new day.
She tried to sing, and this time, a small, wobbly note came out. It was not perfect, but it was real.
They continued to the Brook, where water chuckled over stones. And here? Remy asked.
Melody listened to the water. I sang with the brook, she remembered. We made music together. My voice and its rhythm. I sang because I was part of something bigger.
Another note came, clearer this time, harmonizing with the water song.
Finally, they climbed to the top of the Old Oak, where they could see the entire valley spread below like a patchwork quilt. Do you remember this view? Remy asked.
Melody looked out at the worldāthe green meadows, the winding river, the distant mountains, the creatures going about their lives. And suddenly, she remembered everything.
I sang, she whispered, because I had a voice. Because the world was beautiful. Because even one small bird could add to the music of the universe.
She opened her beak, and this time, the song poured out. It was not the same as beforeāit was richer, deeper, filled with the wisdom of winter and the joy of rediscovery. It was the most beautiful song Remy had ever heard.
Other animals stopped to listen. A deer lifted her head. A squirrel paused in his gathering. Even the wind seemed to quiet to hear.
When Melody finished, the valley was silent for a moment, as if holding its breath. Then the applause beganāchirps and chatters and rustles of appreciation.
Melody turned to Remy, her eyes shining. Thank you, she said. You helped me remember that my song was never lost. It was just waiting for me to be ready to sing it again.
Remy smiled. Sometimes, he said, we need a friend to help us remember who we are.
And as they sat together on the branch, watching the sun climb higher, Melody sang again. This time, it was a new songāone about a brave rabbit with a red scarf, who helped a bird find her voice.
