Remy and the Honest Mistake
Remy loved visiting Maple at her burrow. The little mouse had become one of his dearest friends ever since he helped her find the courage to share her maps with the world.
Today, Maple was working on her most special map yetāa chart of all the friendship paths in the meadow, showing how every creature was connected to every other.
She had stepped out to gather some berries, leaving Remy to admire her workshop. Her favorite quill, made from a peacock feather, sat in its special holder. It was the very first quill she had ever used, a gift from her grandmother.
Remy hopped closer to look at her work. He was so excited to see the friendship map that he did not notice his scarf catch the edge of the quill holder. Crash!

The beautiful peacock quill lay on the floor, snapped clean in two.
Remy froze. His heart pounded. Maple's favorite quillābroken. Because of him.
He could hide it. Tuck the pieces under a cushion. Pretend it never happened. Maple might think she misplaced it. She would be sad, but she would never know...
No. Remy shook his head. He remembered the tortoise who taught him about courage. Courage wasn't just about facing scary forests. It was about doing what was right, even when it was hard.
When Maple returned, Remy was waiting, holding the two pieces of quill.

Maple, he said, his voice trembling. I broke your quill. I am so sorry. It was an accident, but I should have been more careful. I will help you fix it. I will find you a new one. I will...
Maple looked at the broken quill, then at Remy. Her eyes were sad, but not angry.
Oh, Remy, she said softly. That quill was precious to me. But you know what is more precious?
Remy looked up, confused.
You told me the truth, Maple said. You could have hidden it. You could have lied. But you chose honesty. That means more to me than any quill.
She took the pieces from him. And you know what? We can fix this together. With glue and patience, and maybe some new feathers to strengthen it. It will not be the same, but it will be stronger. Just like our friendship.

Together, they worked on the quill. It took all afternoon. The repair was visibleāa thin golden line where the break had beenābut it worked. And whenever Maple used it, she smiled, remembering that her friend valued honesty more than his own comfort.
That night, as Remy walked home, he felt lighter than he had in hours. Telling the truth had been scary, but carrying a secret would have been heavier.
